BACKGROUND

The municipality of Saint-Alfred de Beauce is located on the right slope of the Saint-Lawrence basin, northwest of Saint-Georges. It is characterized by its attractive lakes surrounded by properties owned by both permanent and seasonal residents. This locality is encircled by a generous forest that once supported forestry workers. Hunters and fishers can enjoy the presence of water bodies as well as a mixed and coniferous forest cover.

The parish of Saint-Alfred was founded in 1926. It includes areas that were once part of Beauceville, Saint-Victor, and Saint-Benoît. It is an agricultural area characterized by the richness of its maple groves and woodlands. The area includes Sainte-Marie, de l’église; Saint-Louis, Saint-Étienne, as well as Saint-Guillaume and Saint-Alexandre, which run parallel. At one end is Saint-Alexandre-Sud. At the other is Lake Fortin, part of which lies within the limits of Saint-Alfred.

Where does the name Saint-Alfred originate? It has no connection to the saint himself... Rather, it is named after two generous individuals who contributed to the founding of the parish: Alfred Veilleux and Alfred Langlois. The latter was, at the time, an auxiliary bishop entrusted with the parish. They wanted to honor them by naming the parish Saint-Alfred. At a time when the clergy held great importance, Alfred Veilleux's wife, a teacher, devoted herself through her letters and trips to Quebec City to obtain the bishop's canonization of the parish of Saint-Alfred.

Happy exploring!
