The Association of the Most Beautiful Villages of Quebec is defined as a network of rural municipalities, part of whose territory contains one or more village centers or hamlets representative of human settlement in Quebec, both in its geographical, historical, and cultural aspects, presenting authentic and harmonious ensembles of natural, human, and architectural heritage forming a high-quality landscape.

As for the public contest by the newspaper La Presse (dating back to 2012), it allowed small municipalities in Quebec to submit their candidacies to ultimately elect the winner of the most beautiful village in Quebec according to La Presse. The finalists, as well as the winning village, were designated based on public votes.
